PerioLase® MVP-7™ Dental Laser Receives Prestigious Award

The PerioLase® MVP-7™ has been awarded the “Best of Class” Technology award from the Pride Institute — an honor reserved only for products that demonstrate excellence in their category. Manufactured by Millennium Dental Technologies, Inc. (MDT), the PerioLase MVP-7 is designed specifically to support the LANAP® protocol — a patient- and doctor-preferred laser periodontitis surgery.

The PerioLase MVP-7 is the world’s first medical device to incorporate a Samsung® Galaxy tablet display, leveraging the open Android™ platform and control system to enrich the experience of the clinician and patient. Intuitive ‘pinch and zoom’ interaction provides clinicians with immediate access laser-operating parameters while enhanced retinal display technology allows clinicians to view diagnostic quality x-rays on the crisp LCD display. With the tablet functionality, patients can watch educational videos on the screen in the operatory to increase their understanding of LANAP treatment.

“It is a great honor to be chosen as a winner of this prestigious award, especially as it highlights technologically advanced products,” states Robert H. Gregg, DDS, MDT co-founder and president. “With the Android PerioLase MVP-7, a clinician can now receive continual product upgrades without the purchase of a new machine. This breaks the paradigm of planned obsolescence currently part of manufacturing capital equipment, effectively making obsolescence obsolete.”

“Winning the Pride ‘Best of Class’ award reflects MDT’s commitment to bringing together advanced science and developing technology to increase acceptance of laser periodontitis treatment,” adds Delwin K. McCarthy, MDT co-founder and chief information officer. “A unique factor of the Android-based platform is it is also fully backward compatible with all existing PerioLase MVP-7 laser devices — an important benefit to our current LANAP-trained clinicians.”

The Pride Institute Best of Class Technology awards were launched in 2009 to provide an unbiased, non-profit assessment of available technologies in the dental space. Now in its fourth year, a panel comprised of leading voices in dental technology comes together to discuss, debate and decide which products merit recognition. Organized by Dr. Lou Shuman, DMD, CAGS, President of Pride Institute, the panel is committed to a selection method that is unbiased and rigorous. This facilitates a dynamic process that, year-to-year, honors products obscure and well-known, basic and aspirational.

“The technology space has exploded in terms of quantity and quality of available products,” said Dr. Lou Shuman. “With the potential for a considerable investment, it is important key technology leaders step up and provide the dental community with a balanced selection process, with the sole focus of providing true guidance.”

The panel consists of seven dentists with significant knowledge of and experience in dental technology, including Dr. Shuman; John Flucke, DDS, writer, speaker and technology editor for Dental Products Report; Paul Feuerstein, DMD, writer, speaker and technology editor for Dental Economics; Titus Schleyer, DMD, PhD, associate professor and director, Center for Dental Informatics at the University of Pittsburg, School of Dental Medicine; Marty Jablow, DMD, author, speaker, technology consultant, and columnist for Dr. Bicuspid; Parag Kachalia, DDS, director of new technology at the University of the Pacific, School of Dentistry; and Larry Emmott, DDS, technology writer, speaker and dental marketing consultant.

“We feel very honored that a panel of this magnitude has recognized the outstanding technical capabilities of the Android PerioLase MVP-7 for treating periodontitis and look forward to participating in the Technology Showcase at the 2012 ADA annual meeting,” concludes Dr. McCarthy.
